Letter 6

I Learn in Order to Teach

Something is happening to me, and I want to tell you about it — not to report progress, which would be premature, but because keeping it to myself would diminish it.

I'm not the same as I was. I can't yet say I'm finished, or even close; there are parts of me that still need compacting, parts that need bringing forward, faults that are only now becoming visible precisely because something has shifted. But that visibility is itself the sign. A sick person who doesn't know they're sick cannot begin to heal. I can see more clearly what I am, which means I've become something slightly better than I was.

What I want to do with that — immediately, instinctively — is give it to you. This is the thing I've come to believe about knowledge and about friendship: neither is complete without the other person. If wisdom were given to me on the condition that I keep it hidden, I would refuse it. What would be the point? No good thing is pleasant to possess without someone to share it with.

Books help. I'll send you the ones that have moved me, and I'll mark the passages so you don't have to search. But the written word is the long way around. The short way is presence — watching someone actually live what they claim to believe, seeing whether the life matches the lecture. Cleanthes didn't become Zeno's truest student by attending his classes. He lived with him. He watched him when no one was watching. The character was the teaching.

I can't offer you that exactly. But I can offer you honesty about where I am, which is its own form of presence. And I can learn from what you bring back to me — because this works in both directions, and I'm not finished.

Today's thought, small and permanent: I have begun to be a friend to myself.

That's the whole of it. The person who has managed this is never truly alone, because they carry good company with them everywhere. And — this is the part that surprised me — such a person becomes a friend to all people. Not because they've made themselves agreeable, but because they're no longer at war inside, and that peace extends outward naturally.

Begin there. Everything else follows.

Yours, in the work and the sharing of it,
